I know the devastating pain of losing a loved one by suicide. Losing someone you love for any reason is difficult, but with suicide, there is an added layer of ugliness. Shame, guilt, disbelief, anger, and questions of how this could happen add layers upon layers on top of the devastating grief. It takes a great deal of strength to continue forward after losing a loved one to suicide.
My life was forever changed on July 22, 2014, when my father ended his life. I had a choice to make. I could allow shame, guilt, and sorrow to swallow me whole or I could seek to find a new version of myself through vulnerable self-discovery.
My story is one of love, loss, redemption, and gratitude. Love that never ends even through tragic loss. Redemption by way of finding a lost voice. And gratitude for the gifts of wisdom that emerged along the way. My wish for you is to recognize that in the most tragic moments of your life, you can emerge with clarity and be inspired to transform yourself.
BIO
Best-selling author, international speaker, and mental health advocate, Cindy Tank-Murphy offers a unique perspective on the much-needed conversation around overcoming the grief from suicide and the mental health epidemic around it. Trained in Mental Health First Aid and certified in QPR, a suicide prevention technique, Cindy believes we can eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness through awareness and open dialogue that will ultimately save lives.
Cindy’s life was forever changed on July 22, 2014, when her father ended his life, and she was left with a choice to make. She could allow shame, guilt, and sorrow to swallow her whole or seek better understanding through education and a new version of herself through vulnerable self-discovery. Thankfully, she chose the latter, which began a massive shift in her healing journey, one that has had a profound and lasting impact on her future and called her to be a compassionate voice regarding mental health.
In the years that followed her father’s suicide, Cindy began to notice similar signs of depression, anxiety, and dissociation in her teenage daughter. Her mother’s intuition knew she needed to seek the right expertise and treatment for her daughter, or she might find herself reliving the devastation of suicide all over again. As someone who has both experienced the emotional impact of suicide from someone who has succeeded and the anguish of keeping it a bay from someone who is contemplating it, Cindy understands the fear that comes from both ends of the spectrum and acknowledges it from a perspective that enables her to be a supportive lifeline for others.
Her gift is her desire to help others heal by exploring their own stories and finding compassion and understanding amid the sorrows of suicide. Her personal experience, perspective, and passion for sharing her experience make her an ideal mentor and a compassionate voice for those struggling emotionally with suicide loss or dealing with someone they love battling mental illness.
Through her dedication to raising awareness and providing support, Cindy gives a compelling and personal account of how she began the healing process and provides supportive steps to help her readers do the same. In her debut solo book, The Strength To Live, she shares how to move through your grief and find the hero in you on the other side.
